چکیده

Unemployment in the OECD: Models and Mysteries This paper compares models used to explain OECD unemployment. The models suggest that the “natural rate of unemployment” has been driven up mainly by wage push factors. Panel data on twenty-two OECD countries are used to investigate the explanatory power of these models over the past two decades. Our estimates reveal that coefficients on key variables often turn out with signs which are at odds with the theories or are insignificant and that a second order autoregressive model performs nearly as well as all the other models. The conclusion offers some directions for future research. JEL Classification: E24, J64, C52

Measuring Hysteresis in Unemployment Rates with Long Memory Models

We address the question of unemployment hysteresis within the context of ARFIMA models. Our results suggest that in the post-1973 era, hysteresis is considerably less of a stylized fact for the unemployment rates of key OECD economies. A supply-side explanation of European unemployment

In this article, we offer a supply-side explanation of two striking patterns in European unemployment as compared with that of other member countries of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). (See figure 1 and table 1.) The first pattern is that of average unemployment rates. These were similar for European and non-European OECD countries during the 1960s and 1970s, b...

Labour Market Institutions and Unemployment in Europe and OECD – a Survey

There are many descriptions of how unemployment in Europe and other OECD countries evolved over time (see for example Blanchard (2005) for an overview). In this respect, Europe has been a puzzling case with high and persistent unemployment rates. In short: Unemployment in Europe was low in the 1960s and it increased in the 1970s and 80s. Since then, unemployment has become highly heterogeneous ...

Global Factors, Unemployment Adjustment and the Natural Rate

OECD unemployment rates show long swings which dominate shorter business cycle components and these long swings show a range of common patterns. Using a panel of 21 OECD countries 1960-2002, we estimate the common factor that drives unemployment by the first principal component. This factor has a natural interpretation as a measure of global expected returns, which is given added plausibility b...

Unemployment and prostate cancer mortality in the OECD, 1990–2009

The global economic downturn has been associated with increased unemployment in many countries. Insights into the impact of unemployment on specific health conditions remain limited. We determined the association between unemployment and prostate cancer mortality in members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). We used multivariate regression analysis to assess t...
